Buddy's Vocabulary - Updated 3/19/00

[ Normal Stuff | Recognized Expressions | Strange Behaviors]

The "Normal" Stuff

  • Sit,
  • Stay,
  • Shake,
  • Play Dead (learned this at 1.5 years old, so you can teach an older dog new tricks),
  • Heel (or "okay" when we want him to proceed from stop position),
  • Kiss,
  • Speak,
  • Up,
  • Sing (two barks, instead of one),
  • Down,
  • Quiet (or "Shhhh"),
  • No,
  • Outside,
  • Come (or "Where's my Buddy?"),
  • Go Potty
  • Off the Bed,
  • On the Bed,
  • Give Me Five

    Recognized Expressions

  • "Get Your Baby"/"Where's Your Baby",
  • "Take Your Baby Inside" (meaning he brings his baby toy inside the bedroom before we go to sleep),
  • "Where's Your Bone?" (also, "Go Chew on Your Bone" has the same effect),
  • "Where's Your Ball?",
  • "Go Kiss Daddy",
  • "Go Kiss Mommy",
  • "Go See Mommy",
  • "Go See Daddy",
  • "You wanna treat?" (distinguishes "Wanna Pigs Ear?" from other treats),
  • "You wanna fight?" (the command "Truce" will end the fight; fight equals light wrestling with Daddy and light chewing - um, by Bud that is),
  • "Wanna go for a WALK?" (causes a terrible spaz until he gets his leash and he's out the door; continues to bark at the door),
  • "Wanna Go For A Ride?" (he loves this the most, although as a pup we were GUARANTEED he would puke some time during the trip,
  • "Get in the Back" (when we are riding in the car, he likes to join us in the front; when we tell him this, he runs to the back of the car,
  • "Wanna Take A Bath?" (see, also, Strange Behaviors),
  • "Rub The Tummy" (he rolls on his back and spreads his legs),
  • "Are You Hungry?"
  • "Go night night"/"Go to your bed"

    Strange Behaviors

  • He sings "Happy Birthday" (he sings whenever any song is sung by any live person nearby - it's basically the same tune he's barking, but don't tell him we know).

  • Buddy's goal when he "fights" with Daddy is to completely dominate Daddy via use of his patented forearm hump, rather than the typical pin-down. This forearm hump was discovered in the Pet Shop on the day he was purchased - it was the way he said "Hello, take me home" to his owners and is the event that led to Buddy's middle name

  • When we bark at the television, he immediately helps us out by running to the tv and joining us (he may have taught us this trick as he was the one who started barking at any ANIMAL - including cartoon ANIMALS - he saw on the tv; this is a very interesting behavior because he is bright enough to tell the difference between humans and animals even when he's watching a cartoon),

  • When he hears "Wanna," his ears pop up anticipating a following "treat" or "pig ear" or "walk" or "ride." But when we say "bath" instead, his ears go back down (he hates baths more than anything),

  • When he is lying down, if we approach him with our hand towards his belly, he spreads his legs informing us that his belly needs rubbing.
